Newman to host charity fishing tournament

By ThatsRacin.com
Lake Norman anglers in December have a chance to compete against NASCAR drivers and win a fully equipped fishing boat, all in the name of charity.

Nextel Cup Series driver Ryan Newman will host a bass tournament Dec. 8 from Queen’s Landing in Mooresville, with the top prize being a boat valued at $38,000. Tournament proceeds will go to the Ryan Newman Foundation, which educates people on the importance of conservation, provides college scholarships and encourages pet spaying and neutering.

For Newman, said foundation director Rosalie De Fini, the charity is a chance for some to learn what he learned about the outdoors from his grandfather.

“He grew up with a role model who taught him about enjoying and respecting nature,” De Fini said. “He wants to pass that along to kids who maybe couldn’t experience the same thing.”

The tournament idea came from Newman’s favorite pastime, De Fini said. Nextel drivers Martin Truex Jr. and Regan Smith are also participating, with other drivers possibly committing in the future.

Newman, who has 12 career wins, will also host a charity dinner and auction Dec. 7.

Want to Go?

What: Charity dinner, auction and fishing tournament to benefit the Ryan Newman Foundation.

When: 6-8 p.m. Dec. 7 for the dinner and auction, and Dec. 8 for the tournament.

Where: The Charles Mack Citizen Center for the dinner and auction. Queen’s Landing for the tournament.

Cost: $100 per person ($175 per couple) for the dinner and auction. $150 ($200 after Nov. 8) for teams of two anglers with a maximum of 250 teams.
