Gilliland, son of former Cup driver Butch Gilliland, worked on his dad’s Winston West Series team in 1996. The younger Gilliland won the Perris Speedway track championship by 1999, and in 2000 he participated in a limited season in the Winston West Series.
Gilliland moved on to the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Series in 2003, winning five races and ending the season with five top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He was sixth in the point standings.
He also made his first Craftsman Truck Series attempt in 2003, but did not qualify. But Gilliland’s Busch Series debut came at Phoenix after he qualified 28th, but he finished 43rd after an early crash.
Gilliland made plans to run a full schedule in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series in 2004 and had two victories. He also ran all non-conflicting NASCAR Grand National Division West Series races. He won his first race in that division at Mesa Marin Raceway and was named rookie of the year for that series.
Driving the No. 84 Clay Andrews Chevy part time in 2006, Gilliland earned a best finish of 29th in his first four starts. On his fifth race, he posted his first career Busch win.
His first Cup race took place at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma where Gilliland finished 32nd.
