The 15-year Cup Series veteran won at Dover, ending a 175-race losing streak. So far in the 2007 season, he’s racked up one win and has had five top-five and seven top-10 finishes.
Burton, who has been racing for more than 30 years, drove his first go-kart when he was just seven years old. He won two Virginia karting state championships, and in 1984, he made the move to stock cars.
At South Boston Speedway, Burton’s home track, he won six Late Model races in 1986, and another seven in 1988.
The same year, Burton competed in five Busch Series races for his dad, and twice finished 11th. His first series win came in 1990 at Martinsville, while Burton was driving for Sam Ard.
It was full time in the Busch Series for Burton all the way through 1993. In 1992 he finished a personal-best ninth in points.
Burton made his Cup debut in 1993, and by 1994, he had won Cup rookie of the year. Burton career really kicked off in 1996; it was also his first year driving for Jack Roush. He finished the season 13th in points and had six top-fives and 12 top-10s.
1997 began a four-year period in which Burton finished in the top five in points. He accrued 15 of his 17 career victories during that time as well, finishing third in points in 2000 – a personal best.
In 2001, Burton won twice and finished 10th in points. He left Roush Racing to race with Richard Childress Racing in 2005 | | | | | | |
