| | | | | | BAM'S NEW MAN | John Andretti provides boost to BAM Racing's No. 49 team | |
| | By Reid Spencer / Sporting News Wire Service On Thursday, driver John Andretti met car owner Beth Ann Morgenthau for the first time.
On Friday, Andretti qualified her No. 49 Paralyzed Veterans of America Dodge 16th for Sunday's 3M Performance 400 Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Morgenthau's Dodge had qualified for only seven of the previous 22 Cup races, and Andretti's 16th-place effort was the best for the No. 49 since Mike Bliss qualified ninth for the March 28 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Andretti is the fourth driver to start for BAM Racing this year, and he brings a refreshing attitude to go with his desire to compete. But he's also realistic in his expectations.
"I think if we could finish in the top 20, that would be awesome,"
Andretti said. "Today, running in the top 15 is like running in the top five (a few) years ago. So that's how close the competition has gotten.
It would be big if we could run on the lead lap. It's easy to get lapped here." | | Posted August 19, 2007 , 4:03 pm EST Last Updated August 28, 2007 , 4:50 pm EST | | | | | | | | | | |
