| | Kansas City, KS Kansas Speedway is a relatively new addition to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series circuit.
The story of Kansas Speedway began in 1996, when International Speedway Corporation began looking into building a track in the Midwest. In 1997, Grant Lynch was appointed president of the Kansas Speedway Corporation project, and in 1998, bonds were sold and financing was approved to begin construction on the 1.5-mile, tri-oval speedway project.
On August 21, 2000, tickets for the speedway went on-sale worldwide, and by August 25 – just four days later – Kansas Speedway announced that almost 80 percent of the season tickets for its inaugural season had been sold.
Just one month later, the paving work began and by the spring of 2001 the track was completed.
In 2001, Jeff Gordon won the first ever Cup race at Kansas Speedway, with Ryan Newman only .0413 seconds behind him in second place.
Major events at Kansas Speedway include the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, NASCAR Busch Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Indy Racing League.
