Petty has a rich family racing history, including his father Richard and grandfather Lee. While he was growing up, Petty was offered college scholarships for basketball and baseball, but he chose to follow his passion for racing. In 1979, he won the ARCA Daytona 200 and made his Cup debut, finishing ninth at Talladega in his first race.
In 1981, Petty started racing full time in the Cup series, finishing the season with one top-five and 10 top-10s, and 12th in points.
He then left Petty Enterprises and joined the Wood Brothers, and in 1985, he ended the season 9th in points, with seven top-fives and 12 top-10s.
A year later in February 1986, Petty got his first taste of victory with a win at Richmond, and ended the season 10th in points. Petty finished the 1987 season with one win, six top-fives and 14 top-10s.
1992 and 1993 were Petty’s best season while driving for Felix Sabates. He finished fifth in the point standings both years, and in 1992, he saw the only multiple-win season of his career with two victories.
Petty has more than 750 career Cup starts, placing him in the top 10 drivers with career starts.
He was named True Value “Man of the Year” in 1998 and Winston Cup Illustrated “Person of the Year” in 1999.
Petty’s charitable efforts are well known in the racing community, including the Victory Junction Gang honoring his late son, Adam.
