Truex Jr. won the Busch Series championships in 2004, becoming only the second driver to win the Busch Series Championship in his rookie season. In 2004, he won seven Busch Poles and had 26 finishes in the top 10.
He won the Busch Series championship again in 2005, and competed in seven Cup races, finishing a career-best seventh at Lowe’s in May. It was his only top-10 in nine career starts.
Truex Jr. was introduced to racing by his father, former Busch series driver Martin Truex. His son was racing go-karts by the time he was 11 years old, and by 14 the younger Truex won the Junior Class Championship and New Jersey Championship series at New Egypt Speedway.
By the time he was 18, Truex won his first Modifieds feature, and in 1999 he won the Wall Stadium Turkey Derby. He then moved on to the NASCAR Busch North Series, winning for the first time in his eighth start in 2002. In 2001 Truex had two wins, nine top-fives and 11 top-10s in the North Series, and in 2002 he won a series-high six poles and broke three track records.
Also in 2001, Truex debuted in the Busch Series driving for a family-owned team. In 2003, Truex drove for Chance 2 Motorsports co-owners Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Teresa Earnhardt, finishing up the season consecutive runner-up finishes and three top-10s in six starts. | | | | | | |
