Roger: Matt Kenseth has yet to win the late-summer race at California, but he’s the two-time defending champ of the early-spring event. And he recently led 32 laps at Michigan, a track similar to California. This is Kenseth’s best shot to get another win before the Chase starts. Roush
Fenway cars are strong at this type of fast track.
Sleeper: Jamie McMurray.
Not so fast: Kevin Harvick.
Vinnie: The song says there’s “more bounce in California,” and drivers can expect a bumpy ride on this challenging track. Judging from his back flips, Carl Edwards has enough bounce to match. He’s usually good at California and will want to rebound after finishing 29th there in February. This win, coming after his Bristol win, will make him a favorite in the Chase.
Sleeper: Elliott Sadler.
Not so fast: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Last week: Vinnie ate into Roger’s 103-point lead when Kurt Busch finished sixth at Bristol and Roger’s pick, Jeff Gordon, finished 19th.
Standings after 24 races: Roger, 3,217; Vinnie, 3,158.
