Vinnie: The only thing that stopped Denny Hamlin’s two-race reign in Pennsylvania back in June was the rain. Hamlin led the most laps, but Jeff Gordon benefited from pit strategy that put him in the lead when the race was halted after 106 of 200 laps. Now Hamlin needs to solidify his No. 2 spot behind Gordon in the Nextel Cup standings. As long as the race goes the distance at Pocono, the No. 11 Chevy will get a huge win.
Sleeper: Martin Truex Jr.
Not so fast: Carl Edwards.
Roger: Hamlin did have the highest driver rating at Pocono in June, but No. 2 in that category was Ryan Newman, who finished second in the race and recorded the 10 fastest lap times in that event. Newman has hit a lull of late and he hasn’t won since 2005, but that victory came at New Hampshire – another flat track. Newman has five top fives in 11 races at Pocono, and this is his time to win.
Sleeper: Casey Mears.
Not so fast: Greg Biffle.
Last week: The boys didn’t fare well in their first race after the break. Roger went with Denny Hamlin, who had another looooong pit stop (70 seconds) and finished 22nd. But at least Roger’s choice finished the race. Vinnie went with Jimmie Johnson, who had to flee a burning car after smacking the wall. Johnson finished 39th.
Standings after 20 races: Roger, 2,730; Vinnie, 2,561. | | | Permalink | Comments (0) | | | | | | | | | | |
