Vinnie: Just like Jimmie Johnson, I expect to celebrate my second consecutive championship season, but I need a special way to do it. I’ll try not to hurt myself emulating the winning back flip of Carl Edwards, whom I like to break through for his first Homestead victory. Edwards has three top 10s in three races at Homestead.
Sleeper: Clint Bowyer.
Not so fast: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Roger: Jeff Gordon needs everything he can get in the final race, and I’m not about to bet against the four-time champ to get it done. I’m not encouraged by his struggles in recent races at 1.5-mile tracks in Texas and Atlanta, but I do like that he won at Charlotte for the first time since 1999. A win for him would be so much better than a Jimmie — and a Vinnie — repeat.
Sleeper: Martin Truex.
Not so fast: Kasey Kahne.
Last week: Even though Roger scored a fourth-place finish with Tony Stewart, he still lost 30 points to Vinnie, who won once again with Johnson. Vinnie takes a 111-point lead into the final race at Homestead, which means he’s in better shape than Johnson is in the real Chase.
Standings after 35 races: Vinnie: 4,868; Roger: 4,757.
