| | Richmond, VA The historic Richmond International Speedway is one of the most popular tracks among drivers as well as fans. Richmond is a fixture on NASCAR’s schedule, with 30 straight Cup sellouts. In addition to hosting the Cup and Busch Series, the track also hosts the Indy Racing League, or IndyCar Series, and the United States Auto Club Silver Crown and National Sprint Car Series.
The facility also hosts the Virginia Golf Show and Richmond Home and Garden Show among other events.
Richmond is a standout, with its three quarter-mile layout, which produces great side- by-side racing. But drivers are still able to obtain high speeds giving Richmond International Speedway a superspeedway feel.
Racing got its start in Richmond in 1946. It was then that Ted Horn drove a Champ Car in for a win on a .5-mile dirt track at Strawberry Hill Speedway.
NASCAR was founded two years later, and in 1953, the sanctioning body staged a race in its Grand National Division at Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds on April 19.
Since then, Richmond International Speedway has seen three name changes, four configuration changes, and one surface change, from dirt to asphalt. In 1991, lights were added – it’s the only track to hold all of its major events under the lights.
The fall date at Richmond International Raceway is the final race leading up to the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup.
