By the time he was eight years old, Gordon was racing motorbikes and by the time he turned 16 was on to cars, winning the first off-road race he entered.
He won a half-dozen off-road championships, but was hungry for more and moved on to sports cars in 1990. In 1991, Gordon won five GTO races and in 1992 went on to win a Trans-Am race. He moved to open wheel in 1993, driving an Indy car for A.J. Foyt.
While he racked up wins and podium finishes in CART and the International Race of Champions, he became involved in NASCAR’s Winston Cup, driving for different teams and eventually forming his own team in 2001. After stellar performances in both 2001 Winston Cup races, Gordon signed on to finish the season driving RCR’s Number 31 Lowe’s Chevrolet. During that time, he posted his first oval track top-10, and won at New Hampshire. He continued driving No. 31 in 2002, running 34 races, and finishing in the top-10 five times. Success continued in 2003, when Gordon won at Sonoma and became the fourth driver to win both road races in the same year.
In addition to NASCAR, Gordon recently became the first American to win a stage at the Dakar Rally | | | | | | |
