His father, Coo Coo was a Grand National driver and Sterling’s son Steadman has also competed in the Busch and Craftsman Truck series.

Marlin won three Nashville Speedway track championships during the early 1980s, and ran his first full Cup season in 1983, winning rookie of the year honors.
It was not until 1987 that Marlin raced again full time; that year he finished 11th in points, and for the next 10 consecutive seasons he finished 15th or better in the point standings.
After finishing in the top 10 in points three times, in 1994 Marlin won the Daytona 500 for Morgan-McClure Racing. In 1995 he win the Daytona 500 again, becoming the third driver to win consecutive Daytona 500s. Marlin won two more races in 1995, and finished the season third in the point standings. He held the points lead for 25 consecutive weeks in 2002, but missed the last seven races after a crash.
