Jeff Gordon started strong in Sunday's race, but midway through the event, the engine in his No. 24 Chevrolet began to lose power. Finally, the motor blew, and Gordon retired from the race in 41st place after completing 266 of 313 laps.
Accordingly, the four-time Cup champion will have to win the season finale next Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway to extend his 14-year streak of winning at least one race each season.
"The kind of year we've had with this DuPont Chevrolet team -- we've had a lot of stuff happen to us, but engines haven't been one of them.
"This is just the kind of year we've had. Every time we get the car running good, something happens."
Gordon dropped two positions in the Cup standings, to seventh.
