Marcos Ambrose posts another solid run at Memphis

From Staff Reports
Fortunately for Marcos Ambrose and the No. 59 Kingsford Tailgate at Home Ford, things ended better at the Kroger 250 last Saturday than it started.

Ambrose was hit from behind on the 29th lap at the Memphis Motorsports Park, sending his JTG Daugherty Racing-prepared Ford sliding through the second turn. Ambrose recovered from the early accident to finish 15th, extending his streak of Top-20 finishes to 17 in the last 18 races.

The Tasmanian was doing double-duty last weekend, driving his NASCAR Nationwide Series Kingsford Ford on Saturday at Memphis, then participating in the Sprint Cup Series race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday. Longtime JTG Daugherty mentor Robert Pressley practiced and qualified the team’s car; Ambrose arrived at the track in time for the race.

“Robert has helped up set up the car a couple times this year and he really does a great job,” Ambrose said. “He gave us a good package for the race. It’s really tough to get to a racetrack and the first time you see it is during the parade laps. But thanks to Robert, it was a very smooth transition.”

Ambrose remained 10th in the Nationwide Series standings. With three races to go, the team is on track to accomplish both of its season-long goals – to win a race and finish in the Top 10/

“We really wanted more than a 15th-place finish, but it was a solid effort by everyone involved,” said crew chief Gary Cogswell. “We were caught off guard by the long green-flag runs early in the race, especially since there were 25 cautions there a year ago. We were prepared for a lot of short runs.”

“We’re never satisfied with anything out of the Top-10, but we’ll take it, Ambrose added. It was a decent day for points, so we took a step closer to finishing higher in the points. In the end, that’s the important thing. Sometimes you don’t get lucky on how the race unfolds. You take what you get, you make the most of it and you learn from it.

“Now I can’t wait for Texas.”
