| | SceneDaily Staff David Stremme was a bit like a relief pitcher in baseball who held a close lead in the ninth inning – only to give up a grand slam.
Stremme, subbing for the injured Dario Franchitti in Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 40 Dodge, led twice for two laps of Sunday's Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway.
But on the final lap of the race, Stremme was swept up in a multicar accident and finished 28th.
“It’s disappointing, but I had fun today,” Stremme said. “We ran well. There’s not much we can do.”
Stremme was called on for relief duty after Franchitti suffered a broken left ankle in a grinding crash in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Talladega. Stremme had been replaced by Franchitti in the No. 40 for this season.
But Stremme was strong at Talladega, spending many laps racing with the leaders before slipping out of the draft in the latter stages of the race and then getting caught up in a last-lap crash.
“I ended up in a bad position at the end,” Stremme said. “I was left hanging out of the draft. When everything started, I had no place to go. Considering everything, we were there at the end with a chance for a good finish.”
