Martin Truex Jr. thinks things are coming together for his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team.
He looks at the race at Dover International Speedway last Sunday, an event in which he finished sixth, and sees signs of better days. That and a strong performance in a recent NASCAR Sprint Cup test session at Pocono Raceway, have the driver entering this weekend with renewed confidence.
“It’s too early to say that things have turned around for us, but I can just tell that things are starting to click,” Truex said. “We finished sixth at Dover, and we had one of the fastest cars at the test in Pocono.
“We made a strong run in the points last summer, and this season has that same type of feeling. We’ve been bringing good cars to the track, but we had been getting hit by bad luck. Hopefully, that’s all behind us.”
Truex finished third at Pocono Raceway last year in the midst of a surge that vaulted him into Chase contention. This year, he has three finishes of 14th or better in the last four races and sits 15th in the standings entering Sunday's Pocono 500.
He likes the three-turn, 2.5-mile oval, though he hasn't consistently turned in top performances there. He does have two top-10s there and generally runs well in races there.
“Each corner is so distinct, so that makes it harder to figure out,” Truex said. “It’s not really an oval, and it’s not a road course. It poses its own challenges for the drivers and the crew chiefs in determining the best setups for the cars. We always seem to run good there, so I guess we’ve been able to figure the place out somewhat.”
