In announcing his pick to win the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, Lowe’s Motor Speedway President H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler held a dog-and-pony show.
Make that a dog-and-dog show.
He brought out dogs to represent his contenders – a greyhound to represent Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and a Doberman pinscher to represent Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch.
For his dark horse, he had a pit bull terrier to represent JGR’s Tony Stewart.
And for his pick to win? A small back-flipping dog named Princess to represent Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards.
“I believe we can do this,” Edwards said following Wheeler’s announcement. “If we can do a back flip like Princess on Saturday night for a million bucks, it would be the coolest win ever.”
Wheeler makes an annual prediction on who will win the all-star race, the 24th edition of which goes green Saturday night at LMS.
“He’s a racer’s racer in the mold of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Cale Yarborough,” Wheeler said of Edwards. “He’ll put that 99 car in places … where nobody else will go. He has got a fire burning in his heart that few drivers have.”
Edwards said he expects that Busch, Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be among his main contenders for the win. But he also wouldn’t count out Greg Biffle, who was running strong at Darlington last weekend until an alternator belt broke.
“My teammate Greg Biffle – he’s mad right now, he’s angry and he wants to win a race after the other night,” Edwards said.
Wheeler asked if Edwards would do a double back-flip from the flagstand if he wins.
“That probably would be the last thing I ever did,” Edwards said with a laugh
