| | By SceneDaily Staff AVONDALE, AZ -- Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer takes the blame for a final-lap incident with Denny Hamlin last week at Texas Motor Speedway.
The two made contact late in the race after a green-white-checkered closed up the field for the final pair of laps. Bowyer finished 10th, Hamlin fifth, after the contact.
“Oh, it was my fault,” Bowyer said. “There ain’t no way of getting around it. I just pushed up into him and we hit and it turned me into the wall. He tried to lift. It’s just racing. You can’t expect him to back out and let me have it and you can’t expect me to back out and let him have it.
“You’ve got 300-400 feet to the finish line. I just got the bad end of the stick that time. It’s been that way my whole career. You give me a shot up off of [Turn] 4 racing with somebody and I’m going to take it.”
He could have a shot again in Saturday night’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Bowyer says he loves coming to Phoenix. He won a Busch Series race there and views it as a track where competitors can really race.
So far this season, his Richard Childress Racing team and teammates have been competitive most everywhere. Jeff Burton is atop the standings with Kevin Harvick second. Bowyer has climbed to 11th after some early setbacks. While Bowyer still sees some room for improvement within the organization, he cannot help but be pleased with the early results.
“We’ve got to get better but obviously we’ve come a long way,” he said. “ I’ve very proud of everybody at RCR for putting together equipment that makes Jeff and Kevin and me look good. But we’ve got a long ways to go. We’re not going to sit back and watch it happen, we’re going to make it happen.”
