| | | | | | STILL LOOKING | Gilliland: No sponsor yet, but Yates Racing car is strong | |
| | By Reid Spencer / Sporting News Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - David Gilliland, the polesitter for the 2007 Daytona 500, said the lack of sponsorship for his No. 38 Yates Racing Ford adds a certain degree of pressure, but that doesn't mean he's pessimistic about the 2008 season.
"We're really excited," said Gilliland, who posted the 19th-fastest time in the Monday morning test session at Daytona. "I feel very positive about the 2008 season for us. ... I think we've been building some cars that are really going to perform well for us this year, and I'm real excited about that."
Gilliland starts the season with a new crew chief, Cully Barraclough, but there's already a comfort level because of history between the two. Barraclough worked on a race team for David's father, Butch Gilliland, eight years ago.
Gilliland also feels he can address the lack of sponsorship with a strong performance in the 50th Daytona 500, scheduled for Feb. 17.
"I'm sure everybody is a little stressed out about it, but I feel if we can go out and perform well, the rest will take care of itself," Gilliland said. "I feel like we definitely have a good team and the cars to be able to go out and do that."
