| | By Reid Spencer / Sporting News DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- At Daytona testing last month, four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon promised that February's Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway wouldn't lack for excitement.
After one day on the track, he's already right.
Gordon was one of five drivers forced to use backup cars for Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout, after Friday night's crash-filled practice session eliminated the primary cars of Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Bill Elliott and Kurt Busch.
Because drivers haven't mastered the nuances of NASCAR's new racecar, Gordon believes there are more pyrotechnics to come.
"I think we're going to see a lot of things like this happening, because the drafting is so severe that there is a lot of movement going on out there," Gordon said. "It's going to be exciting. I've been saying it's going to be exciting, and I think there is a whole lot of excitement yet to come. But hopefully, at the end of the day, we can have a great race."
