| | By Lee Montgomery / SceneDaily.com HAMPTON, GA -- Matt Kenseth and his Roush Fenway Racing team aren’t usually so bad that they get lapped early in a race. But that’s exactly what happened in the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Starting at the rear of the field because of a transmission change, Kenseth was an early victim to leader Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s fast pace by going down a lap.
But Kenseth rallied, getting the free pass back on the lead lap during the second caution. And from there, he made another Kenseth-like progression to the front before finishing eighth.
He didn’t lead a lap, but the top-10 finish did move Kenseth up four spots to 12th in the Sprint Cup points standings.
“The end result was great,” Kenseth said. “We didn’t run good at all and we were able to overcome almost being two laps down to finish eighth.
“Overall, I’m happy with the result. It was really a struggle. We ran really bad and got a good finish, so I’m happy with that.”
