| | | | | | Fantasy picks for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway
Reid Spencer, Bill Marx and Roger Kuznia of the Sporting News are matching wits in the Pit box in 2008. The rules are different this year.
They can pick a driver only once during the season. But for good measure, each also will pick his favorite to win the race.
Reid’s pick: Scott Speed. The No. 84 Red Bull car is quick -- trust me -- and Speed will benefit from double duty in the Craftsman Truck Series. I also think a two-point bonus is in order for each of Speed's blue toenails. Can you tell I'm grasping at straws as the season winds down?
Who Reid really thinks will win: Let's see, for a pick this critical, I've got to go with Brad Keselowski, who looked good in finishing 19th in his Cup debut at Texas two weeks ago. Congrats to Bill, who saved some strong horses for the end of the season.
Roger’s pick: Robby Gordon. Of the drivers I have left, Gordon was the highest qualifier (14th). Man, how I would love to beat Reid for second.
Who Roger really thinks will win: Carl Edwards. Shooting for 5,000 points
Bill's pick: Let's see ... hmmm ... this is a toughie. All I have to do is select a driver who is in the race (and I haven't picked before), and I will be the Pit Box champeen of 2008. Hmmm ... maybe I'll start Joe Nemechek, he of the 33.6 average finish with six DNFs for crashes this season. Shoot, maybe Joey Logano will race ... or Kenny Wallace ... or Kyle Petty ... or Richard Petty ... or Tom Petty ... no, I think I'll start rookie Regan Smith.
Who Bill really thinks will win: Matt Kenseth. The popular pick is Carl Edwards. I'm betting Kenseth gets his first win of the year.
Last Week
As Bill so eloquently described above, we have a champion in Bill Marx. Bill cinched the one-and-done competition when Jimmie Johnson won at Phoenix, as he now has an insurmountable 176-point lead heading into the finale. Roger made up ground on Reid in the battle for second place, as his pick of Regan Smith (23rd) outperformed Reid's selection of Scott Speed (40th). Reid's lead is now just 46 points over Roger. In the real picks, Reid extended his lead to 62 points with Johnson, while Bill did well with Carl Edwards (4th) but remains in second place. Roger's pick of Jeff Gordon finished 41st.
Points standings
One and done: Bill, 4,086; Reid, 3,910; Roger, 3,864.
Real picks: Reid, 5,315; Bill, 5,253; Roger, 4,854.
